The word Tiramisu means “pick me up.” In Italy, coffee espresso is a way of life. Throughout the day, Italians would get a little shot of espresso to keep up their energy. Over time, chefs began baking espresso into desserts to get their boost on energy there! Now the dessert is popular, not just as an evening after dinner delight, but can also be enjoyed in the morning into the late afternoon.
Here at Piccola Italia Ristorante, we have a secret house recipe that will leave you craving for more. Our Tiramisu is made with ladyfingers soaked in espresso and Kahlua, layered with Mascarpone cheese, dusted with cocoa powder. Interested in making trying it at home? Here’s a recipe.
Tiramisu is relatively simple to make. Made up of two layers: a layer of cream and another of espresso-soaked ladyfinger. Here are the steps to creating the perfect Tiramisu:
Step 1: Soak half of the ladyfingers in coffee syrup and lay them in a casserole dish.
Step 2: In a saucepan, combine six egg yolks and 3/4 cup sugar and continue whisking
over simmering water for 10 minutes. Then alleviate the steam and allow it to cool
slightly.
Step 3: Beat 16 oz mascarpone with 3 Tbsp rum. Then beat and add the warm yolk to the mixture until smooth.
Step 4: Whip 2 cups of heavy cream. Combine half into the mascarpone mixture, then mix the remaining half until you reach the desired consistency.
Step 5: Spread half the cream over the first layer of ladyfingers. Dip the second half of the remaining ladyfingers and lay them over the cream layer. Spread the remaining cream on top of the final layer of ladyfingers. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Coat with cocoa powder and enjoy.
